The Temple your character wakes in will be their 'affiliation' during their stay in the Nexus World. This will not have any day-to-day effect unless you live in the Temples or choose to work there, but it can come in to play during some events which will all be detailed at the time.

travel

Oct. 24th, 2013 07:05 pm
travel.

As you can see from the world map, there are some locations your character might want to visit that are several day's hike from the home.

There are currently a few (but as the game continues more can be added) methods of travel available to the character:

Walking. Good old one foot in front of the other. This takes the longest and you are much more likely to encounter less than friendly denizens of the world.

Rickshaw. Speedier and less dangerous than walking but they rarely travel far from the point of origin. Each journey is one credit (one-way cost).

Hovertrain. Trains that run entirely on magic and float a little above the ground, they are fast and reliable and will easily keep beasts from you on your journey. Each journey is three credits, round trip.

Teleport Pad. In every Nexian settlement, in the very centre of each hamlet, village or town, there is a large pad inscribed with many different arcane symbols. Simply stepping on one of these and paying five credits will take you instantly to the corresponding pad where you wish to go (round-trip cost). If you build or request a home in the wilderness, you will get a private pad but it will still cost to use.

Of course, you might have a character that has canon powers of movement. These will be limited until you get to higher levels (exactly what will be added at a later date) so the methods outlined above will be both safer and more reliable.

game-specific terminology.

In alphabetical order:
● Brethren, The

The Brethren is made up of a group of dissatisfied and ambitious Nexians. They, like most, were born elsewhere and during their cycles of life and death, became aware of the Nexus and its place in the multiverse.

During their life cycles, they have repeatedly chosen to return to the Nexus and started to become jealous of the Temple Elders - the only true immortals. They want the same thing and their plans are what brought your character to the Nexus World by an unexpected side effect.

● Circle River, The

The Circle River literally encircles the world. The world is flat and the edge of the river marks the boundary. Nothing can fall off of the boundary due to the mystical forces swirling with the water in the river. The river shimmers and shifts in colours like the Aurora Borealis and it harbours all kinds of aquatic creatures.

● Joined Temples, The

The Joined Temples are the Temple of Body and the Temple of Spirit. These two intertwining buildings serve as the hub in the world. The Temple guards, keeps and maintains the Web and ensures the recycling of death energy in to new life energy.

The elders, one for each Temple, are the sole true immortals.

● NCD

The Nexian Communication Device is a dual device of a mystical watch and screen. The two in conjunction allow for communication, a clock and a system of currency (credit) calculation. You can find more information on the NCD here.

● Nexians

The Nexians are those who have chosen to live in this world, feeding life energy in to the Nexus Web to sustain and grow all of the known worlds and universes.

● Nexus Web, The

The mystical web that joins each and every world, dimension, plane and universe to the Nexus. Life and Death energy flows back and forth between it and it can throw out new shoots, creating new worlds.

● Nexus World, The

The World where it all began, all life began here and when it attained enough energy that it could no longer contain it, the Nexus Web was born from it, creating ever more life.

This is where your characters live and it is made up of the Joined Temples and the Elemental Lands.

● Temple Elder

One male and one female who oversee and maintain the Temples. They were born with the Nexus World and they will never die unless the world does as well.

● Wellspring, The

This is a mystical upswell of energy from the Circle River and it can occasionally grant wishes via visiting and bathing in it and then touching the Wishstone.

● Wishstone, The

After being bathed in the mystical upswell of the Wellspring, travelling to the Wishstone and requesting your wish can be granted or denied by this stone. The Wishstone is inside the Joined Temples.

world guide.

The air is thick with magic and brimming with energy. The colours are lush and the claim that this world grew all others from it feels very true as you move through the flora and fauna of the Nexus World.

Excepting the two Temple Elders, there are no natives to this land at all, all here either chose this or were brought here by accident. They have made it their home and ensure it flourishes.

Looking in to the sky, there is no sun or moon, only a blanket of twinkling stars. These stars are all new connections and offshoots of the Web. Each twinkles to the world below and lights it. These star-connections change colour during the day, from being blazing yellows and oranges in the day hours to being soothing whites and blues at night. They provide enough light and warmth that those from worlds with suns would not feel like they were without. This also means that vampires from canons that suffer from sunlight damage will have no restrictions by day.

There might not be a moon, but there is an effect on moon-sensitive characters such as werewolves. This comes from the ebb and flow of the Circle River and the mystical wellspring. For the dates of the 'full moon' and 'new moon' equivalents, check the month's calendar.

The Nexus contains the four base elements - earth, fire, air and water - as well as the building blocks for life - the body and the spirit. All are represented with their own areas.

In the centre of the world is the huge circular Joined Temple; one comma shape represents the body and the other fitted snugly to it is the comma shaped spirit.

Around the temple are the four quarter-circle lands. Fire and Earth top the circle and air and water make the bottom. They are all encircled by the Circle River - off of which none can fall. If someone attempts to jump or throw something off of the side, they will simply find themselves stuck there, but facing back in to the world itself.

The Fire Lands are rich in volcanic-ash fertile lands around the two volcanoes but they are still active and it can be somewhat hazardous. The rest of the lands between the volcanoes and the water is desert-like but many interesting water-filled plants and adaptive wildlife live here. Nearer the segment of the Circle River, there are beaches and it is warm and lush.

The Earth Lands are rocky in places and mountainous. There is more variation to each landscape here than any other area. The rest of the lands are flat and perfect for agriculture.

The Air Lands alternate between lush forests, where most of the locals live in the trees, and huge open plains. These are beautiful and fresh but occasionally they can turn in to windy flats.

The Water Lands are mostly set upon a huge lake and the Circle River. Fish and other aquatic flora and fauna flourish here and many homes are built on the lakes and rivulets (akin to Venice) or close to one of the bodies of water. It can also be dangerous if you are careless as the lush plants can hide deep pools or carnivorous creatures.

The Circle River is both magical and regular water, the two mixing together and swirling. The colours are amazing to look upon, in an effect like those of the Aurora Borealis (video plays music).

The people that call this place their home have always been very pacifistic, but they are troubled by The Brethren - those who went rogue and brought these others to this world without their own choice.

They know that should the Brethren succeed, life and death will be flung out of balance and more worlds than just their own will be jeopardised by this need for immortality by so few.

While they would prefer to keep all fighting from their lands, they have started to accept that it is not always possible, especially now that some troubling and dangerous creatures have been drawn in and begun to live in the Nexus.

They allow the newcomers to fight and have grudgingly begun to learn some basic combat skills themselves in case they are put in a position where they have no choice but to fight. They still prefer to leave it to the newcomers where possible, though.

metaplot overview.

The multiverse had to start from one place. That place is the Nexus World.

This flat world is where the building blocks for life began. The spirit, the body, the elements and a touch of magic.

Generated here is life energy that moves along the web and sustains every living thing from microbes to whole universes. As things are born they also die and this death energy returns to the Nexus to be recycled.

This system continued for untold millennia and some of the deceased souls became aware of the world and chose to exist there instead of returning to their world. Thus, the world started to fill with more beings that could generate energy through the act that creates life.

Most of these people lived peacefully, submitting to the cycle of life and death. However, a small group of people started to become jealous of the Temple Elders who are the two sole true immortals.

Wanting to attain the same immortality, they created a secret society and attempted to separate worlds from the web in the belief that severing the cycle of death's return would render them unable to die.

There was a flaw in the plan, though; instead of severing the ties it opened them to bring people who have not yet died or those who have not yet been recycled back to their world.

Thus, the new age began...

economy

economy.

● What counts as money in the Nexus?

There is no physical money to speak of. All of your wealth is calculated in credits. These are stored on your NCD and can only be accessed by the owner of that device.

● So how do I pay for things?

Contactless technology. A little like how we can wave our credit cards over a reader and pay like that, you can hold your NCD over a carved stone or piece of wood with a mystical symbol on it. Every stall or shop will have one and that charges the amount in credits that you owe.

● How do I earn credits?

You can do many different things; the employment page is here. You can also open a business once you have been in-game long enough to gather together the credits and/or stocks you need to begin.

● Can my character take out loans?

No, unless they are arranged between two player characters. There are no real financial institutions as such, the Temples oversee any transactions that require it.

● My character wants to eschew money and live off of the land. Can they do that?

They can do that! The homes inside of the Temples will give you free meals in return for helping them in the gardens and around the Temple. Homes outside of the Temples will all be stocked with vegetables, grain and seeds to get you started.

● As a guide, what sorts of prices would things be?

A loaf of bread would be one credit, a pair of nice shoes would be ten credits and a fishing skiff would be a hundred credits. On this sort of sliding scale credits can be based, we do not worry too much about exact costs and how much the character has in their NCD as long as it is realistic.

WISHES

Oct. 15th, 2013 09:22 pm
wishes.

Wishes will not be immediate or granted often, but there will be occasions when the magical well deep in the Water Lands will have collected enough energy to grant the seeker's desire. This wellspring is connected to the Wishstone.

To have your wish considered by the Wishstone, you must journey to the source of the well and bathe in the magical energy. Some of the life-force you have generated will be taken from you and added to the mystical waters.

You then must travel back to the Joined Temples of Body and Spirit and place your hand on the Wishstone. If your wish is granted, it will brighten from a deep, undulating blue to a bright sky blue. If it has not, the colour will not change, but the energy you have given will be remembered by the stone.

how to get a wish granted.

To have a wish granted, the character must ICly make this quest. It will take time in-game and will only be granted to those who have generated enough life energy for the Nexus Web (this will be decided on a case-by-case analysis as for example a wish for a pet dog would need greater energy to grant than a wish for a specific tome).

With regards to time taken, this will be on a changing basis. If your character is in the Fire Lands and going directly there then they will take less time than someone taking a scenic route. Both will take longer than someone from the Water Lands to get there so feel free to play around with length of time taken.

You can also have an odd side-effect of bathing in the mystical waters if you wish to affect your character on a temporary basis which can also be asked for here (cursing characters).
